#1 Tip for More Bookings:
What’s the best
way to get bookings?
You’ve probably asked yourself this. In my opinion, the answer is:
Have a really good show.
A good show will generate more repeat business and it will generate more
word-of-mouth business to new customers.
Performing Tip:
Maybe you have a good show already. But could it
be improved? Ask a close friend to watch your next show and give you an
honest critique. Don’t just ask another magician. Ask anyone who is
good at evaluating a product or service. Consider what they say, it could
result in more shows for you.
Marketing Tips:
Using your Restaurant Job as an audition show.
This year I returned a call to a prospect only to find out that she had
already called another magician. Since they hadn’t totally locked in
this other performer yet, I asked her to come and see me perform at one
of the four restaurants that I work at. (She hadn’t seen the other
magician perform either.) After she saw me perform at the restaurant, I
got the job.
Marketing Reasons to work at a restaurant:
1. Use it as an
audition site. Invite people to see you at the restaurants.
2. Tell everyone
that you work there and post it on your web site and advertising. If it
is a restaurant that is held in high regard, then that will help you by
association. It is like the restaurant is validating your performing skills.
3. Use it to collect
birth dates of visiting children.
4. Hand out your biz card to
everyone!
BIG Organizational Tip:
I’ve finally found an office process that really
is working for me.
Background info about me: I have four different
businesses that I run. So organization is really difficult for me because
I could be focusing on so many different things. I’ve really felt the
need to have “One Starting Point”-
So when I start my day in the office I can look at one thing and see everything
for all of my businesses at once.
I’ve found a way to do that now using three
different pieces of software: iCal
and Inspiration and MagicBase.
Inspiration is
a mind-mapping software that I use for planning. I’ve got it set to
auto-start whenever I turn on my computer. Now I have all of my plans and
task lists in one program. I use this software during my daily planning
hour. Then, based on plans and ideas, I can make my priorities for the day
using my calendar program.
iCal is a Calendar
program that comes standard with every Macintosh. A great feature of it
is that I can set up repeating events for every week. (Other calendar programs
like Palm Desktop will also do this.) But then, when I’m actually working
through that day, I can adjust any event as my schedule changes. So, yes,
I am using my calendar program not just to look at a weekly or monthly view,
but also to plan my activities within a single day.
The names of the programs are not crucial. Find any two programs that perform
these same functions:
• one for planning and idea exploring and
• another for your calendar and prioritizing.
MagicBase is my
most important tool for running my business. It’s valuable for any
type of specialty performer, not just magicians. It automates much of my
business, keeps track of my income, my tricks, my shows and my customers. Another great feature is that it has pop-up reminders. Every time I turn on MagicBase it has a list of customers that I need to contact.

I’m repeating this news from last month because it is so important. If you’re running any version before 2.3, you should download the new MagicBase updater and gain the great new features that MagicBase 2.3 has. (To find out what version you’re using, just click on the MagicBase logo on any screen.) CAUTION: This update is only for users who have not previously updated their MagicBase program.
Tutorials #1 - #5 are posted.
Although these tutorials are included with every version of MagicBase that is sold, some users are still unaware of them. If you can’t find them on your MagicBase disc, or you’ve bought a download and so didn’t get them, then download them for free at the MagicBase site. They are very basic. But if you’re a complete beginner with MagicBase, then you should go through them.
