#1 - Report on the TAOM convention
---------------------------------------------------------------------
About 600 magicians participated in the convention, held in
Houston, this year. It went well. Good shows, contests, and lectures.
I had a booth there and was promoting MagicBase Pro, and my
magic creations.
Close-Up Contest:
I also participated in the CU contest.
My goal was not to win the contest, because it's not that kind
of an act. I just wanted to promote my eBook: BAM - The
Complete Course to the Borrowed And Memorized Deck.
My entire act was based on instant memory techniques that
are taught in that book. I did a 9 minute routine that had
5 tricks in it. By the end of the 3rd trick I had 20 cards
memorized!
The big conclusion was doing the famous Any Card At Any
Number trick with a BORROWED deck of cards.
And I wasn't shy about the method. If anyone asked,
after the contest, I was happy to tell them that I memorized
20 cards to do the trick. Usually, they didn't believe me, I think.
The winner of the CU contest was Mark Rayle from Quebec.
Stage:
The winner of the Stage contest was Trig Burrage. He had a great act!
Trig is also registered user of MagicBase Pro.
But the funniest act in the stage contest was Dorian LaChance who shot
Rocky the Raccoon out of a cannon. (Dorian is a MagicBase Pro user.)
By the way, the Dealer Chairman, Scott Wells, and the TAOM president,
Scott Hollingsworth are also MagicBase users.
Other performers there were:
Michael Ammar, Mark Merchant (ventriloquist), Suzanne, Ice McDonald,
Ken Scott, Glen Strange, Banachek, and Mike Bent (very funny!)
Lecture:
Michael Ammar did his all-new lecture with some novel ways to tear
and restore cards. He also had a great set of tricks with an iPhone
using capabilities that are already built in to it. See section #5 for
more info.
And "Welcome" to the 60 new subscribers from the convention!

#3 - Rules to Live By
--------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a number of unwritten rules that guide my magic
performances when I'm traveling. Generally, when I break a
rule, I end up paying for it in some way.
Here are some of them:
• Always check the map before leaving.
• Always pack back-ups for many things: shirt, electrical power, music
and, of course, magic tricks.
• Always keep a back-drop packed in my car.
And then there is a rule that I broke and I was sorry that I did.
Here are some results of breaking that rule:
• Never let someone handle my equipment.
-At a show in Iowa the group was being "helpful" by moving my stuff
and someone set some poles for a prop behind a ledge on a shelf
by the door, and didn't tell me. So I picked up all of my cases that
I could see and then left. Not realizing they were gone until I had
driven 2 hours to get home.
-At one crowded venue, I specifically asked the leader to call me if they
needed to move my equipment for their program. They moved it without
my knowledge. I didn't know it until I was doing my Head Cutter trick and
found out that something was misplaced while I was performing.
-Last week the janitor at the school offered to push his flatbed cart
which held my cases after the show. Thinking that he felt some type
of ownership to his cart, I let him do it (against my better judgement.)
When he got to my car by the curb, there was a slant on the pavement.
He forgot that my cases had wheels and they started to roll off the cart.
He tried to grab them and stop them from completely falling, but one
of them banged into my car as he tried to stop everything on my cart
from falling off. :-(
As this happened, I scolded myself for breaking one of my own rules.

Here's a review from a new user:
"I love it. It's great! I'm from another country and english is my
second language. It's so easy to learn your program. I use it in
spanish and english. It keeps everything organized and ready
for my contacts; saves me a lot of time and paperwork and
money. With a touch I can see my routines, times and even
maps. If there's a program you ever need, get this one. It's
the most complete I've ever seen. You won't be disappointed."
